Description

The vineyard site is located on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Cru belt, just below the southern side of the village and north of the Clos de Beze. This makes it the most northerly Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin and ultimately in the Cote de Nuits. Mazis-Chambertin vineyards are well drained and stony, with a thin layer of pebble-strewn, chalky topsoil over a deep, rocky base. The higher end of the slope has particularly thin limestone soils (which continue on the Ruchottes-Chambertin site above), forcing the vines to grow deep and strong root systems.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has an intense bouquet, perhaps with some of that broodiness I noted out of barrel, yet still exquisitely defined, featuring earthy dark berry fruit laced with black truffle and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied but delivers good grip and conspicuous density. This is a Mazis-Chambertin that means business. It wants to impress, but on its own terms. Have a cellar handy, as well as plenty of patience.
