Clos St. Jean is both a larger lieu dit, but also a demarcated part of the field of just 2 acres is elevated to 1.er Cru. Above the field is a large limestone quarry, which provides an insight into the unique soil, which is inextricably linked to Chassagne-Montrachet's world-famous quality.

Limestone is a porous soil type that provides good drainage of rainwater, so the stems are stressed to use only their energy to grow their grapes, rather than growing leaves and long branches. At the same time, the limestones help to steer the wines in a lighter and more mineral direction, which serves as a fantastic counterpoint to the Chardonnay grape's characteristics of fatness and creamy texture.

Tasting Notes

In the nose you are met by a multitude of citrus fruits, where especially lemon and pomelo press on. But the moment you get the wine in over your lips, you wake up the sleeping dragon. An eruption of flavor nuances unfolds, and a powerful and Chassagne-Montrachet-faith expression unfolds. Ripe yellow apples, a touch of baked spices and a feeling of orange peel and a creamy texture wash over the taste buds. It is to that extent worthy of the title of Premier Cru, and for food this is an excellent companion.
