Ardbeg - 1998 Almost There | Single Malt Scotch Whisky

NOSE:
The nose bursts with the classic Ardbeg peat smoke that is both powerful and inviting. Smoky bonfires, roasted meats, and the familiar medicinal qualities are balanced by notes of sea salt, brine, and wet stone. Underneath the smoke, there are subtle hints of citrus—lemon zest and orange peel—intertwined with vanilla, honey, and a light sweetness, creating a layered and complex aroma.

TASTE:
On the palate, Almost There is full-bodied with a pronounced peat influence, but the whisky’s maturity brings a smoothness and balance. The smoke is still very present, but it is joined by flavors of salted caramel, toffee, and a touch of dark chocolate. Waves of fruitiness, including dried apricots and a hint of red berries, combine with the characteristic maritime notes of iodine and seaweed. The mouthfeel is rich yet smooth, with a hint of spice emerging toward the mid-palate.

FINISH:
The finish is long and warming, with the smoke lingering as expected, alongside traces of dark fruit, a touch of honey, and the saltiness of the sea. The oak influence is subtle but provides a clean, slightly drying end, balancing out the sweeter elements.
